Chevy Impala is designed to help keep you on the road and in control. StabiliTrak(1) Electronic Stability Control System with Traction Control helps prevent skids and slides that can happen in an emergency. The system monitors things like your vehicle's speed and side-to-side movement. When the vehicle doesn't adequately respond to your steering commands, the system brakes each wheel individually and decreases engine torque to help maintain a stable direction of travel. Antilock brakes help you maintain steering control by reducing wheel lockup during hard braking on most slippery surfaces. This ranking is based on our analysis of 51 published reviews and test drives of the Chevrolet Impala, and our analysis of reliability and safety data. Car reviewers just don’t like the 2011 Chevrolet Impala. While the Impala has good fuel economy and a roomy cabin it also has poor interior quality, out-of-date mechanics and underwhelming performance – which lead many critics to suggest you shop the competition. Car shoppers of a certain age may remember when the Chevrolet Impala was a shining example of what Detroit could build. Refinement, power and acres of chrome were the original Impala’s calling card. If you’re shopping the 2011 Chevrolet Impala out of nostalgia for the Impala of the 1960s, you won’t find what you’re looking for. The Impala’s current incarnation is a poor choice among affordable large cars. Consumer Guide says the Impala “feels dated when compared to class leaders,” and most reviewers agree. While other car makers have updated their large cars, Chevrolet has let the Impala age –it hasn’t done so gracefully. Saddled with a bland design, a four-speed transmission (most competitors offer five or six gears) and a basic cabin, the Impala doesn’t offer buyers much beyond a low entry price for the class and optional seating for six. Other Cars to Consider It’s easy to find a large car that doesn’t suffer from the same shortcomings as the Chevrolet Impala. The Ford Taurus has been winning lots of praise since its 2010 redesign. The Taurus boasts more power than the Impala, a more stylish exterior design and class-leading interior features like Ford’s SYNC infotainment system. Plus, the 2011 Taurus is an Insurance Institute of Highway Safety “Top Safety Pick” and has available all-wheel drive. The Taurus offers a lot more than the Impala does and only starts at about $800 more. Chevrolet Impala: The Details The 2011 Chevy Impala is available in LS, LT and LTZ trims. Fleet buyers can also opt for an FL trim. Buyers can chose between a 3.5-liter or 3.9-liter V6 engine. There are few updates on the Impala for 2011. Since the 2011 model is so similar to the 2010 model, you may be able to save some money by opting for a 2010 model; dealers should be motivated to get the 2010s off their lots to make room for the 2011s. See our Chevrolet deals page for current discounts on the Impala. "Its cabin refinement and handling dynamics are a few steps behind the class leaders." -- Edmunds “It wants to be a modern family car, but it also seems to reach back to the heyday of models that boasted powerful American steel. In the end, it parks itself squarely in the middle." -- Boston Globe "Not much to complain or get excited about. The Impala LS is what it is, good enough to make the Impala easily the best-selling American-branded car." -- Orlando Sentinel "Higher-quality interiors and more involving driving experiences are available from top-line competitors such as the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata."-- Car and Driver Impala Performance - 6.8 (Mediocre) The 2011 Chevrolet Impala has forgettable performance. In the past, the Impala has had a performance-oriented SS trim with a small-block V8, but the SS model didn’t make it to 2011. Instead, reviewers say the Impala has two V6 engines that balance power and fuel economy fairly well, but those positives are overshadowed by sluggish handling and an outdated transmission. Read More Impala Exterior - 7.4 (Good) While other affordable large cars look tailored and moderately upscale, reviewers say the Impala looks bland. Read More Impala Interior - 7.1 (Good) The 2011 Chevrolet Impala doesn’t have an interior that’s as nice as what the competition offers. In fact, reviewers say the interior is downright bad. "Particularly in the lower trim levels, the various plastic surfaces look and feel cheap," writes Edmunds. "The wood trim is laughably bad, while the standard cloth trim is genuine rental-grade mouse fur." Read More Impala Safety - NA Through the 2011 Chevrolet Impala hasn’t been crash-tested yet, the nearly-identical 2010 model earned strong crash test scores from the federal government. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2011 model good scores. Read More Impala Reliability - NA Chevrolet provides a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on the Impala.
